Kirby Lake (Brazos River Basin)
Kirby Lake is located about five miles south of Abilene in northeastern Taylor County, on Cedar Creek, a tributary of Clear Fork Brazos River, which is tributary to the Brazos River. The lake is owned by City of Abilene for water supply, irrigational, and recreational purposes. Construction of the dam began in 1927 and was completed in 1928. Deliberate impoundment started in the same year. The lake has a capacity of 7,620 acre-feet with a water surface area of 740 acres at the conservation pool elevation of 1,786 feet above mean sea level. The dam controls a drainage area of approximately 44 square miles.
