Identification of Potential Brackish Groundwater Production Areas – Gulf Coast Aquifer

Project Summary:

In 2016 the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) contracted with INTERA, Inc. to delineate fresh, brackish, and saline groundwater, both vertically and horizontally, in the Gulf Coast Aquifer, calculate the volumes of those waters, and identify potential brackish groundwater production areas.

TWDB Contract Manager:
Nathaniel van Oort
Funding Recipient:
INTERA, Inc.
Project Administrator:
Steve Young, INTERA, Inc.
Project Start Date:
January 6, 2016
Project Completion Date:
September 30, 2016
Total Project Cost:
$500,000
TWDB Share of Project Cost:
$500,000
Benefits:
This project will facilitate TWDB with the process of designating brackish groundwater production zones in the Gulf Coast Aquifer, as stipulated by the 84th Texas Legislature in House Bill 30. This includes submitting a report to the Texas Legislature by December 1, 2016. Results from this study include estimates of the extent, volume, and availability of potential brackish groundwater production areas in the Gulf Coast Aquifer. Results will aid in regional water planning and state water resources analysis.
