Background and System:
The Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Kerrville is Texas’ only Kroc Center; a legacy of Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s corporate founder Ray Kroc. Opened in November 2010, the Center has a 48,000-square-foot roof that can produce close to a million gallons of rainwater annually.
The rainwater harvesting system consists of two 65,639 gallon galvanized water storage tanks fitted with food-grade liners, over 2,000 feet of underground transmission piping and a pumping station that serves all of the landscaping needs through drip irrigation. All of the rainwater is transmitted to the storage tanks by gravity.
Education:
The system is a featured part of a curriculum taught by a local rainwater harvesting installer, Barry Wall, through the Kerrville ISD’s Club Ed, a do-it-yourself program.
