Cursory Floodplain Dataset
The current Cursory Floodplain Dataset developed by TWDB in 2021 is a statewide set of 3-meter resolution flood hazard rasters that includes probability frequencies of 20% (5-yr), 10% (10-yr), 1% (100-yr), and 0.2% (500-yr) annual chance flood events. The dataset provides existing condition flood inundation estimates (in 2021) for a combination of pluvial, fluvial, and coastal flood hazards, covering the entire state of Texas. More information about this data and instructions on how to obtain and view this data is at the link below.
An independent technical review of the theory, methodology, and data sources of the cursory flood model and mapping processes was conducted in 2024. The findings from this review are forthcoming, pending a final review.

In addition, TWDB has an on-going project to develop updated cursory floodplain datasets for both existing conditions (updated with new data available through January 2023) and future conditions to estimate what future flood hazard floodplain extents may look like in year 2060 considering future: land use changes, climate variability and associated rainfall patterns, sea level rise and land subsidence. These datasets are in production and are expected to be available in late 2024. More information about this update is located here.
