Historical Water Use Estimates and TWDB Water Demand Projections

The data in this interactive dashboard displays historical water use estimates and water demand projections for 16 Regional Water Planning Groups and 254 counties in Texas used in developing the 2022 State Water Plan. The TWDB considers six broad categories of water demand, which include: irrigation, livestock, manufacturing, mining, municipal, and steam-electric power.

Note: The charts are based upon static data that is updated periodically as additional or more accurate data becomes available through water use survey responses. Historical data in the dashboards below was last updated on May 30, 2019.

To view the interactive data: Click on a county from the map below or use the region filter on the left. Use the "Find County" Search tool by typing in a county name, and then click the highlighted county on the map. To reset the map, either click "All" on the region filter AND/OR click on a blank spot on the map.

State Water Plan Comparison Tool

This interactive tool compares the data developed for each State Water Plan (SWP) developed since 2002. The data can be viewed statewide, by Regional Water Planning Group, by county, and/or by water demand category (irrigation, livestock, manufacturing, mining, municipal, and steam-electric power). For questions regarding planning methodologies, visit the TWDB Planning Methodology Frequently Asked Questions. Note: The chart is based upon static data that is updated periodically as additional or more accurate data becomes available through water use survey responses. Historical data in this dashboard was last updated on May 30, 2019.

Select Planning Region, County, and/or Demand Category from the chart below to view the demand projections in each State Water Plan.

*Note: BEG High and Low Projection Scenerios refers to the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) study regarding Steam-Electric Power water use demands with two senerios, one high water use and one low water use.
