Resources for Water Well Drillers

This page provides licensed drillers, or landowners drilling wells on their own property, with access to tools, reporting systems, and regulatory guidance. Whether you're submitting reports, checking construction standards, or looking for licensing information, you'll find what you need here.

Common Questions

How do I submit well or plugging reports?

Use the Texas Well Report Submission and Retrieval System to register and submit well and plugging reports electronically.

Where can I find technical guidance on well construction?

The TDLR Technical Guidance page provides construction standards, setback requirements, and rules for abandoned wells.

Do I need a license to drill or install pumps in Texas?

Yes, unless you are a landowner drilling a well on your own property. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) oversees licensing for water well drillers and pump installers.

Texas doesn't require landowners to be licensed in order to drill or plug wells on their own property. However, property owners must check with their Groundwater Conservation District, if applicable, for specific water well guidelines for their region. They must also adhere to all state guidelines for well completion and/or plugging, and must submit a Well or Plugging Report upon completion.

What are the rules for working with unlicensed assistants?

A licensed driller or installer may supervise one unlicensed assistant at a time and must be present on-site. See full details on the TDLR Technical Guidance page.
