River Crest Lake (Sulphur River Basin)

River Crest Lake and its Dam (Photo provided by Freese and Nichols, Inc.)River Crest Lake, an off-channel reservoir, located off the Sulphur River about seven miles southeast of Bogata in Red River County, TX, is owned and operated by the TXU Energy for steam turbine condenser-cooling purposes.  Construction of the river crest levee (dike) began on April 22, 1953 and was completed in November 1953.  Water is pumped into the lake from the Sulphur River and the reservoir reached its normal operating level on May 31, 1954.  Power generation started on June 1, 1954. The lake can store 7,000 acre-feet of water encompassing a surface area of 555 acres, at its conservation pool elevation, 328 feet above mean sea level.
