Brazos River Estuary

The Brazos River Estuary is located on the upper Texas coast and is a riverine estuary that flows directly into the Gulf of Mexico rather than into a system of bays.  The estuarine portion of the river occurs at the terminal end where tidal water from the Gulf of Mexico mixes with the river water.  Typically, the Brazos River Estuary receives an average of 6.3 million acre-feet of freshwater inflow per year.  Historically, the estuary has received a minimum of 1.2 million acre-feet and a maximum of 19.6 million acre-feet of freshwater inflow in a year.  The Brazos River Estuary is located in Brazoria County and is affected by the planning activities of both Region H and Region G (Brazos) Regional Water Planning Groups.
