Victoria Aquifer Storage and Recovery Demonstration Project

Project Summary:

The Victoria County Groundwater Conservation District, in partnership with the City of Victoria, plans to convert an existing groundwater production well to an aquifer storage and recovery well. The well will be used for testing recharge, storage, and recovery of treated water from the City's distribution system. Data collected will used to support developing a full-scale aquifer storage and recovery system.

Benefits:: The project is the first in Texas to attempt retrofitting an existing groundwater production well to an aquifer storage and recovery well and store water in the Gulf Coast Aquifer. It will provide information needed to assess the feasibility of developing a full-scale aquifer storage and recovery system, firming up water supplies from the Guadalupe River for the city and providing operational training for the water system operators. Information on hydrogeologic characteristics, water quality, and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality permitting processes will benefit other water purveyors considering implementation of an aquifer storage and recovery system in the Gulf Coast Aquifer.
