Squaw Creek Reservoir (Brazos River Basin)
Squaw Creek Reservoir is located about four miles north of Glen Rose in Somerville County, on Squaw Creek, a tributary of the Brazos River. The reservoir is owned and operated by TXU Generation Company LP, now Luminant, for condenser cooling purposes for the Comanche Peak Nuclear Generating Station. Construction of the reservoir began in the 1970s and was completed in 1979. The dam is an earthfilled embankment of 4,700 feet long, with a maximum height of 158 feet from the streambed. The top of the dam is at elevation of 796 feet above mean sea level. The uncontrolled emergency spillway is located near the left end of the dam and is cut in the natural ground with a crest of 2,200 feet in length at an elevation of 783 feet above mean sea level. The service spillway is located beside the right end of the dam and is a type of broadcrested weir with a crest of 100 feet in length at an elevation of 775 feet above mean sea level. According to the TWDB December 2007 survey, the reservoir, including the Safe Shutdown Impoundment, has a capacity of 151,273 acre feet encompassing a surface area of 3,169 acres at the conservation elevation of 775 feet above mean sea level. The dam controls a drainage area of about 64 square miles.
