Forest Grove Dam and Reservoir (Trinity River Basin)

Forest Grove Dam and Reservoir (Photo provided by Freese and Nichols, Inc.)Forest Grove Dam and Reservoir is located about seven miles northwest of Athens in Henderson County, on Caney Creek, a tributary of Cedar Creek which is a tributary of the Trinity River, Texas. The reservoir is owned and operated by the TXU Generation LP (then Texas Utilities Electric Company) for industrial (generation-cooling) purpose. The Texas Water Commission issued a water permit (No. 3270, Application No. 3304) for the dam and reservoir on February 3, 1975. The design engineer was Freese and Nichols, Inc. and construction started on September 28, 1976 by general contractor, Central Plains Constructing Co. from Shawnee Mission, Kansas. At normal elevation of 359 feet above mean sea level, the reservoir can store 20,038 acre feet of water with a surface area of 1,502 acres. The drainage area is about 53 square miles.
