Lake Diversion (Red River Basin)

Lake Diversion is located on the Wichita River, a tributary of the Red River, about thirty miles from Wichita Falls on the Archer/Baylor county line, Texas. It was constructed and impounded in 1924 and is owned by Wichita County Water Improvement District No. 2 and the City of Wichita Falls. Under the water right permit (No. 5123) granted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), Lake Diversion is operated together with Lake Kemp, a major upstream lake, as a system for municipal, industrial, mining, irrigation, flood control, and recreational purposes with a water right priority of October 2, 1920. In 1992, the owner added a roller compacted spillway to its dam. According to 2013 TWDB volumetric survey, Lake Diversion has a total reservoir capacity of 35,324 acre-feet and encompasses 3,397 acres at conservation pool elevation (1,052.0 feet above mean sea level, NGVD29).
