An Assessment of Modeling Approaches to Brackish Aquifers in Texas
Project Summary:
The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) is seeking to extend its knowledge of Texas aquifers by performing an analysis of the portions of the aquifers containing brackish groundwater. Successful management of brackish groundwater requires information about the behavior of brackish aquifers under stress. A primary goal of this research proposal is to identify and evaluate the capabilities of existing models for simulating flow in brackish aquifers.
The research proposal is designed to accomplish the following: (I) access through a literature review existing information on the status and applicability of various types of flow models for brackish aquifers and the influence of aquifer geometry and geological structure on salinity distribution and brackish groundwater movement, (2) recommend conditions under which a specific type of groundwater flow model or models might be applicable, and (3) develop a screening procedure or decision-making process that will enable the user to determine the most appropriate groundwater flow model for an aquifer.
